5 inspiring podcasts about sustainable & ethical living

November 14, 2019

The most inspiring sustainability podcastsIf you’d like to be up-to-date with the latest sustainability news, listen to inspiring eco-warriors, or get practical tips on how to live a more ethical and sustainable lifestyle, check out the following green podcasts.

I deliberately selected shows that move beyond discussions on what green brands to buy and either provide practical tips on how we can be more sustainable and ethical in our daily lives or deal with incredibly important scientific, social, ethical, and political questions related to the climate crisis.

Sustainability Defined

The most inspiring sustainability podcasts

Sustainability Defined is a podcast that seeks to define sustainability, one concept at a time. It’s essentially a beginner’s guide to sustainability issues. Each episode focuses on one concept. First, the two hosts give a short introduction to the topic, defining it and covering the basics, then they interview an expert who then goes into more detail. This format (and the hosting style) is educational, informative, and engaging at the same time.

They also categorize the main issues by sectors on the website (see the sustainability tree), so you can browse the topics according to your interest.

Teaser episode titles:

    • Food waste
    • Sustainable tourism
    • Sustainability disclosure
    • Conservatism and climate change
    • Reversing global warming

Warm Regards

The most inspiring sustainability podcasts

The Warm Regards podcast provides thoughtful discussions between leading climate journalists, climate scientists, and newsmakers about the warming planet and its impact on people and society. What I love about this show is that it’s a great mix of science, politics, and social science. It talks about and explains a lot of scientific terms and questions related to climate change, but it also discusses important social-political issues, like representation, voting, climate communication, behavioral psychology and so on. And it does so in a very engaging and thought-provoking way.

Teaser episode titles:

    • Can we fix it? A serious look at where geoengineering stands
    • The global cooling myth
    • Science in a ‘post-fact’ world
    • Empowering women to chill out the planet: Climate and gender equality

Green Dreamer

The most inspiring sustainability podcasts

Green Dreamer features inspiring conversations with sustainability experts, thought leaders, innovators, and activists on a whole range of super interesting topics, from plastic pollution and zero waste through indigenous rights and colonialism to mindful consumption and eco-anxiety. The podcast aims to show how sustainability is intersectional to all areas of our lives and how deeply interconnected environmentalism, social justice, and individual wellbeing are.

It’s a very informative show with lots of knowledge as well as practical tips to share. I also really like the interview style, the host, Kamea Chayne really knows how to frame the topics and lead the conversations in a logical and engaging way, going deeper and deeper into the issues and asking all the questions that pop into your head while you’re listening.

Teaser episode titles:

    • The root causes and effects of ocean plastic pollution
    • The psychology of what shapes public opinion on climate science
    • Tackling our waste crisis while accepting people are inherently selfish
    • Going outside of the sustainability bubble to impact more people
    • Dismantling dominant perceptions of what an environmentalist looks like

Wardrobe Crisis

The most inspiring sustainability podcasts

Wardrobe Crisis is a sustainable fashion podcast from VOGUE’s sustainability editor Clare Press. Clare and her guests decode the fashion system and dig deep into its effects on people and the planet. The show discusses a lot of issues that face the fashion industry today, with a focus on ethics, sustainability, activism, identity, and creativity. I particularly like that while it features more sustainable fashion brands (as good alternatives), it also focuses on mindful consumption and how we should cut back on consumerism.

Teaser episode titles:

    • What to do about consumerism?
    • Clothing ethics
    • Eco-Age & the Green Carpet

Everyday Ethical

The most inspiring sustainability podcasts

Everyday Ethical, hosted by UK ethical lifestyle blogger Bethany Austin, is a podcast about all of the small ways that we can be more sustainable, without the pressure to be perfect. I mentioned this in my previous podcast recommendations that I love podcasts that provide concrete, practical value, and this show is full of that. In each episode, Bethany talks about a different area of life and offers practical tips on how we can make it more sustainable. The show is useful, informative, thorough, and very relatable. I also like the format (15-20-mins long solo episodes) – it’s actually quite difficult to find shorter-form podcasts, so another bonus point for that.

Teaser episode titles:

    • Are books or eReaders better for the environment?
    • How to make your laundry more eco-friendly
    • The 6 tenants to sustainable travel
