Minimalist fashion inspiration: Spring

As much as I love winter layering, chunky knits, wool, cashmere, ankle boots, and oversized cozy scarves, after these long winter months, I’m ready for some major style changes. And spring, along with fall, is my favorite fashion season for sure. You don’t have to hide anymore under a big coat, but it’s still not so hot that ruins the fashion factor. It’s the season for some clever layering, leather jackets, loafers, silk, cotton, playing with proportions, and unique silhouettes. What I said about fall being the ultimate minimalist fashion season is equally true for spring as well.

With that said, these are my favorite spring minimalist fashion looks and current style inspirations.

Lightweight trench coats

Spring equals either leather jackets or trench coats for me. And for this year, I’m gravitating towards loose, lightweight,  neutral trench coats that cascade down gorgeously and are great for layering. My color preferences would be light grey or nude, but black is also a solid choice.

Loafers

Loafers are the ultimate minimalist spring essentials for me and I think they work pretty much in every wardrobe. They bring a slight masculinity to a look, but with a hint of elegance. They work well with denim or skinny jeans, as well as skirts. Also, they are usually (if made from smooth, but firm and flexible leather) incredibly comfortable, great for running errands all day long.

Bring out the nudes

As the weather gets warmer, my wardrobe color palette also undergoes some changes, becoming slightly lighter and fresher. When you think nude, think of it in broad terms – anything from blush, peach, and cream, through ivory and sand, to espresso and caramel. Nudes are also an integral part of a minimalist color palette – they are versatile, soft, elegant, but can be edgy as well. They also work well with a structured silhouette and beautiful textures, as the color (or lack of it in this case) draws attention to the fine details of the material.

Loose pants

I’m basically living in my black skinny jeans all year round, occasionally changing it to a little looser, but still fitted pants during the spring-summer season. But lately I’ve been drawn to the silhouette of loose pants, and I think these just might make it into my spring shopping list. I like that they can be styled with loose shirts, a fine knit, or even a blazer – as well as sneakers, loafers, or flats.

The oversized shirt

Ever since I hijacked my brother’s shirts in high school, I’ve preferred the oversized look to fitted shirts. There’s something very easygoing in this shape, especially in feminine materials like lightweight cotton or silk. Of course, there’s no need to raid our male relatives’ or significant other’s wardrobes anymore (though I still do), shops are full of gorgeous oversized shirts made for women. Tuck it in for an edgier look or leave it out for comfortable, carefree vibes.

Sneakers

A couple of years ago, it would have been pretty much impossible for me to imagine wearing sneakers as a daytime look. I lived in sky-high heels all the time, only wearing any kind of flat shoes for hiking or to the gym. I even managed to avoid and resist the first wave of sneaker trends that hit a couple of years ago. Until my legs just said no more one day and demanded something comfortable for everyday running around. And I had to realize how freaking comfortable sneakers were. I guess there’s some truth to some fashion trends, after all. Since then, these became one my favorite types of spring/summer shoes. They may not be increasingly avant-garde or fashion-forward (though you can find some pretty unique colors and designs nowadays), but they are definitely great spring essentials.

The blazer/T-shirt uniform

This combination for me is THE ultimate spring look and my choice spring uniform. I especially like sturdier and longer blazers nowadays that can also serve as a quasi-coat.

Minimalist jewelry

I don’t wear a lot of jewelry in the winter, probably because usually no one sees them under the 4 layers, a scarf and a hat and they just get tangled and messy. For me, minimalist jewelry does not really work with cozy knits and bulky sweaters either. But as the layers melt off, jewelry can come forward. Layer dainty necklaces (always go for uneven numbers), or pair large unique statement earrings and bangles with your blazer or silk shirt for some spring accessory showcase. One thing that I think is especially true for minimalist jewelry styling: less is definitely more.
